Course Description

This course will cover the basics of the etiology and incidence of cancer, the role of genetics in cancer development, and the 10 principal characteristics of the disease.  In addition, concepts of cancer metastases, cancer epidemiology, and cancer health disparities will be introduced.

  7. Hallmarks of Cancer and Metastasis
  8. Cancer Epidemiology
  9. Cancer Health Disparities

Learner Outcomes

  1. What is Cancer
  • Gain an understanding of basic cancer biology and etiology
  • Identify the major types and stages of cancer
  • Describe the role of screening, diagnosis, staging, and treatments of cancer
  1. Cancer Incidence and Mortality
  • Gain an understanding of the incidence and mortality rates in Hawai‘i
  1. Hallmarks of Cancer and Metastasis
  • Learn the Hanahan and Weinberg’s Ten Hallmarks of Cancer to distinguish a normal cell from a cancer cell
  • Define metastasis, and identify the major steps in the metastatic process
  1. Cancer Epidemiology
  • Gain an understanding of the descriptive epidemiology of cancer
  • Present topics both with respect to key cancer exposures, including smoking, radiation, nutrition, and hormones and also highlight selected malignancies
  • Learn about the Multiethnic Cohort Study for Health Disparity Research
  1. Cancer Health Disparities
  • Describe health disparity issues across the cancer continuum, from etiology and primary prevention to survivorship
  • Highlight disparities in behavior and chronic disease risk among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders
  1. Clinical Research Journal Club #1
  • Understand how to interpret and analyze published articles on clinical research topics
